It might not look like it right now (rain in JULY? No thanks) but the summer can have some real effects on your skin and sunburn can be a real danger.
So what’s your plan for when the weather heats up and you find yourself with a painful sunburn? Do not fear, The Shortlyst is here with some of our top tips for sun aftercare
The best way to deal with painful sunburn is to plan ahead to avoid it in the first place! Even when it looks a bit overcast, our skin is always at risk of sun damage. Using a daily SPF could be your new “never-leave-home-without-it” product.
Even though your SPF might say it lasts the whole day, keep topping up every two hours to avoid any signs of burning. If you’re swimming though, make sure to top up every time you get out of the water!
But what to do when you’ve found yourself out without protection? The first step is to find something to cool it down. We love natural remedies at The Shortlyst and aloe vera is an amazing ingredient to reduce the burn.
Getting this on as soon as possible will save your skin from feeling sore and reduce peeling in the future. Keeping a small pot or tube of aloe vera based after-sun in your bag during the summer months can be a lifesaver.
Cool baths and showers over the next couple of days after your burn could also help the pain. Make sure to apply a water-based, sensitive lotion after you’re dry to keep as much moisture in as possible!
Once your skin is back to its regular, glowing self – keep up the moisturising. Even when it feels like your skin is healed, making sure that you’re always keeping your body moisturised will continue that tanned feeling.
However, if your burn is more serious than you expected and leads to blistering or deep damage, consult your doctor as soon as possible.
